Synopsis

Imagine a small stretch of isolated beach, covered in thousands of turtles. This is the nesting ground for the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle. They appear in huge numbers, and at once crawl their way onto the beach to dig nests in the sand and lay their eggs. On a single beach of Costa Rica, in a small town called Ostional, the largest nesting in the world takes place.

At dawn, the people of Ostional gather and wait along the shore to harvest these eggs (the only legal harvest of endangered sea turtle eggs in the world). The eggs will be sold throughout Costa Rica at markets and bars. Consumed as an aphrodisiac, many believe that the egg allows the community to earn enough money to survive until the next month’s nest, while others in the community believe the town can survive without the harvest. They gather the support of local researchers and government officials who are there to protect the turtles and the beach. And forty years later people are still fighting for the rights to these eggs and the beach itself.

Entre La Cosecha, is a film that takes us on a journey through the lives of a few local people, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the turtles:

Pablo- government official at MINAE who regulates the beach

Magdalena- the new president of the people of Ostional and of the local organization in charge of harvesting the turtle eggs.

Elmit – leads the association of guides, and strong believer in finding other means to protect and conserve the turtle population

Edward -a high school student studying to be a turtle guide in hopes of going to college one day

This is not a story of heroic feats or accomplishment, but rather one of survival.
