Alternative Docs

While filming Between the Harvest we will also be filming vignettes of organizations that are creating positive change along the way.

ELEMENT

Ever since I saw the movie Drive back in 2002 I felt inspired to do more for the skateboarding community. Profiling Element Skateboards' team rider Mike Vallely, Drive takes us on a journey locally and abroad, as Mike challenges and empowers kids through skateboarding. Now, thanks to the generous efforts of Element skateboards (and following in line with their advocacy project in South Africa), I will be stopping at communities in both Costa Rica and Nicaragua, putting on skateboarding demos and handing out boards. I have always left the board under my own feet, and now more kids will have the opportunity to escape the negative influences that surround them in these remote communities.

"Skateboarding saved my life. It gave me a creative outlet, and in turn, self respect and hope. Skateboarding can and should be a positive experience. One that inspires and empowers. Through skateboarding you can change your reality. "
-Mike Vallely, DRIVE

MUSADE

I received a call on October 11, 2008, that Jessica Wells Natalie and her husband, Phillip Natalie, had been killed in a motorcycle crash in Lexington Park , Maryland. Jessica attended the same developing communities internship program in Costa Rica that so positively influenced our lives. She devoted her time to a women's shelter, MUSADE (Women United in Health and Development), developing programs that profoundly changed the lives of so many women in the community. On my research trip I heard the story of a young woman at the shelter who Jessica worked with that is in great need of help. I know that I have no ethical place in helping a women's shelter in Costa Rica, but I care about the lives of all young people and what Jessica was fighting for. In her memory, I will be traveling to MUSADE to bring both in-kind and financial contributions directly to the women's shelter. If you want to give directly to this cause please specify in the donation. We will also be filming something for the shelter to post online, in hopes of garnering further support for MUSADE and places like it all over the world. You can also donate directly to MUSADE in Alajuela, Costa Rica, by going to the following website:
